Managing Seedling Disease Problems on Rice Through Fungicides, Adapted Cultivars, and Cropping Systems

چکیده
Stand problems consistently cause significant production and management losses in Arkansas rice fields. In 2002, many fields in Arkansas had severe stand losses. Three control practices are being examined in this project for managing stand losses due to seedling diseases: 1) seed treatment fungicides, 2) development of cold-tolerant cultivars, and 3) the use of disease-suppressive production systems. The three types of fields from which seedlings were taken in 2002 were: a) fields at the Rice Research and Extension Center (RREC) at Stuttgart where cold-tolerant and standard genotypes of rice were planted over a range of soil environments; b) fields from several rice-producing counties in Arkansas with the stand-establishment problems; and c) fields at the RREC where there is a continuing study of the impact of various cultural practices– crop rotation and tillage–on rice yields. From the pathogenicity studies outlined, results suggest that isolates of Pythium spp. from fields having poor stand establishment in 2002 were more virulent than isolates from randomly selected plants from field studies, supporting the diagnosis that Pythium seed and root rot, caused by Pythium spp., was the cause of these stand failures. These Pythium isolates will be used to determine if the cold-tolerant rice genotypes have increased resistance to Pythium damping-off at lower planting temperatures compared to standard cultivars.

Reaction of Cold-tolerant Adapted Rice Cultivars to Seedling Disease Caused by Pythium Species
Stand problems consistently cause significant production losses and management problems in Arkansas rice fields. Previous research, funded by the Rice Research and Promotion Board, identified the role of environmental factors and soilborne plant pathogens in limiting rice stand establishment, and had the goal of determining the conditions where soilborne pathogens, especially Pythium species, p...

The use of sprinkler irrigation for rice (Oryza sativa L.) crop is a relatively recent practice in Brazil. Therefore, crop soil and fertilization management are still not very well defined. Another problem is the inexistence of specific cultivars adapted to this cropping system. This study aimed to evaluate sprinklerirrigated upland rice cultivars under different soil management practices and n...
متن کاملIdentification of production constraints and yield gap monitoring of local rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars in Mazandaran province
One of the main problems for rice production is the large difference between farmers' actual yields and attainable yields. Therefore, it is important to identify the limiting factors on yield and yield gap. In this research, all performed management practices from seedbed preparation to harvesting in 228 paddy fields of local rice cultivars in the east, central and west parts of Mazandaran prov...
متن کاملChallenges of breeding potato cultivars to grow in various environments and to meet different demands
The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is cultivated all year round in Japan by using four types of cropping: summer and winter croppings, and double cropping in spring and fall. In each cropping season, growth conditions such as temperature, day length, and growing period, differ drastically; thus, different cultivars adapted to each environment are required. Breeding stations are located in both s...
متن کاملPEST MANAGEMENT: DISEASES Efficacy of Fungicide and Insecticide Seed Treatments for Rice Stand Establishment and Growth
Stand establishment problems occur frequently in Arkansas rice fields and are commonly associated with cool soil temperatures (early planting) and saturated soils. There are several factors that affect rice stand establishment including diseases and insects. It is important to understand what pathogens or pests are the cause of stand problems in rice for managing stand establishment problems. I...
